During the first three months of 2020, passenger numbers at Sofia Airport totalled 1 369 656. In the first two months there was an increase compared to the same period of 2019. In January, Sofia Airport served 5.9% more passengers – 558 601 compared to 2019, and in February they were 8.8% higher – 541 636.
Due to the worldwide spread of COVID-19 and the cancellation of most of the flights, passenger traffic at Sofia Airport was significantly reduced in March. The number of passengerswas 269 419 or 52.9% less than previous year’s 572 349 passengers.
The number of aircraft movements for the first quarter of this year was 12 836, with a rise observed in the first two months. Departing and landing aircraft at Sofia Airport were 4858 (up by 4.3% year-on-year) in January, and in February 4589 (up by 7.9% year-on-year). In March, due to the pandemic situation the number of aircraft movements was 3389 or 31% less than the movements in 2019 when they were 4915.
For the first three months of the year, 5769 tonnes of cargo and postal shipments were processed. In January, they were 18.2% more than last year and amounted to 1983 tonnes. In February and March, 1866 tonnes and respectively 1920 tonnes were handled. This marked a decrease of 2.9% in February and 7.1% in March compared to the same period in 2019. However, there was a slight increase in cargo flights, for the period 16-29 March 2020 they were 125, almost two times more than the same period in 2019, when they were 64.
