Sofia Airport, Sofia Municipality Day Care Centre for Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities and “MIM – ART” Theatre celebrated the International day of people with disabilities – 3 December. It is the only theatre of that kind in Bulgaria, whose actors have hearing impairment. At Terminal 2 they showed performance with mimics and gestures that provoke the applause of passengers and guests to the airport. The poem “I am Bulgarian”, the dance “Thracian rachenitsa” and Emil Dimitrov’s emblematic song “If you have given anything” were performed by people with disabilities who are under the care of Sofia Municipality Day Care Centre for Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities.
Sofia Airport’s celebration of the International day of people with disabilities is not without grounds. Since 2008 the airport provides special assistance to passengers with reduced mobility. Employees from “Passenger Personal Assistants”, after calling them from the points with help phone in front the terminals, meet, accompany on the territory of the airport and assist everyone to and from the aircraft if they need help. There is special equipment – 3 ambulifts that are used to transport, lift and take down from aircraft door passengers with reduced mobility using wheelchairs or on stretchers. At special zones in Terminal 2 passengers with reduced mobility can stay before the opening of the check-in desk and with already processed baggage as well.
A proof for the high standard of services for special passengers maintained by Sofia Airport can be the multiplicity of thank-you letters for the personal qualities and the overall activity of the passenger personal assistants.
In 2013 Sofia Airport served 20 524 passengers with reduced mobility, and since the beginning of 2014 until now their number equals to 20 108.
