Strong first half-year of 2015 for Sofia Airport

Passengers

In the first half-year of 2015, the passengers at Sofia Airport equalled to 913 352, which was 75 000 more (+4,1%) as compared to the same period last year.

 

Passenger flow on international scheduled flights increased by 5% on annual basis, which was due to the new destinations proposed in the summer – spring schedule and the additional frequencies introduced for many routes.

The airlines that contributed most to the number of serviced passengers in the period include Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways, Aegean Airlines.

A total of 64 492 passengers used domestic scheduled flights from Sofia to Varna and Burgas (-9,7%).

The number of organized tourists at Sofia Airport, despite the 17 % increase reported by Bulgaria Air, was 5 400 less as compared to the same period last year.

 

New airlines and destinations

With the start of Summer Schedule 2015 airline Swiss International launched new scheduled flights from Sofia to Zurich.

During summer months Italian air carrier Mistral Air serves seasonal route Sofia – Catania, adding a direct connection to Bari.

The direct flights operated by Qatar Airways on Sofia – Doha route that started in early March with frequency of 5 times a week, since the beginning of July are operated every day of the week from Terminal 2.

Since June Bulgaria Air carries passengers on the new direct flights to Dusseldorf.

In July Wizz Air launches five new destinations from Sofia to Napoli, Bari, Geneva, Koln and Memmingen.

 

Top destinations

The most preferable destinations in the first half-year of 2015 were London, Vienna, Milan, Paris and Brussels.

 

Aircraft movements

In the first six months of 2015 a total of 21 217 aircraft took off and landed at Sofia Airport, which formed an increase of 3,5% on annual basis.

4% more international scheduled flights were operated.

The domestic scheduled flights decreased by 3,7% as compared to last year’s period.

Less charter flights and specialized cargo flights were operated.

A revival of general aviation sector could be observed, with an achievement of 21 % increase or 254 more aircraft movements since the beginning of the year.

 

Cargo

Processed mail shipments at Sofia Airport increased by 6,3% in the first half of 2015 as compared to the respective period previous year. The total volume of processed cargo and mail was 8 952 tonnes. A 17% increase can be observed in cargo carried on specialized cargo flights.

 

June 2015

In June 2015 Sofia Airport achieved positive results according to all traffic indicators. The aircraft that took off and landed were 905 (+2,4%), the total number of serviced passengers was 368 440 (+5,4%), and the volume of processed cargo an mail was 823 t (+20%).
