Sofia Airport has a well trained emergency response team and the necessary tools and equipment for providing help in emergency situations.
The airport is prepared to provide assistance to all Bulgarian airports as well as to more distant ones such as Skopje, Belgrade and Bucharest.
Recently, the emergency response team proved its professionalism by providing support at the accident with the Pilatus PC-12 military cargo aircraft that landed without its landing gear at Graf Ignatievo airfield on 29 July. The assembled emergency response team managed to reach the accident site in four hours and, using the suitable equipment, provided assistance with lifting the aircraft and extending the landing gear. In this way, the airport demonstrated in a real life situation its interoperability with other structures in the country.
Major General Rumen Radev, the commanding officer of Bulgarian Air Force, expressed personally his gratitude to Hristo Shterionov, the Executive Director of Sofia Airport, for the timely support that prevented the happening of other accidents.
During the rescue operation the largest airport in the country proved in practice its high level of preparedness, demonstrated during the conducted full-scale emergency response training exercise in April 2014.
