In the first month of 2015 Sofia Airport achieved a 3,3 % increase in passenger traffic in comparison with January last year. A total of 291 169 arriving and departing passengers used both airport terminals. Terminal 2 was used by 65 % of the passengers and Terminal 1 by 35 %.
Passengers on domestic flights to Varna and Burgas increased by 12%, while those on international flights increased by 5,3 % compared to 2014. The lower percentage of the total number of passengers who used the airport is due to the lack of aircraft deviated from neighbouring airports because of adverse weather conditions, unlike last year’s period. The first month of 2014 had a record-breaking number of non-scheduled flights (more than 4 500 arrived and departed passengers) that landed at Sofia Airport due to adverse weather conditions.
In January 2015 charter flights were used by 23 000 passengers – about 600 less as compared to last year’s period. The market share of Bulgarian airlines in that segment shrank from 34 % to 24%, while foreign air carriers marked a 12 % increase in transported tourists.
In January Sofia Airport maintained positive tendency in the number of flights. During the month a total of 3 341 taking-off and landing aircraft were handled as compared to 3 208 in January 2014 (+4,1%).
The increase was achieved mainly by international scheduled flights (+3,9%), which constitute 77 % of all aircraft movements at Sofia Airport.
A growth of 26% was marked by domestic flights as a result of the increased frequencies to Varna and Burgas during this winter season.
In January 2015 a total of 1 310 t cargo and mail shipments were processed at Sofia Airport, which formed an increase of 1 % compared to 2014. Cargo flights continued to hold predominant share in total cargo flow and had a 6 % growth on annual base.
