Sofia Airport ended 2016 with a record-breaking number of served passengers – 4 980 387, which is 22% more compared to the previous year. If 2016 had one more day, the number of passengers would reach 5 million. Terminal 1 saw more than 2,3 million passengers, аnd Terminal 2 – more than 2,6 million passengers.
International scheduled flights were used by 95%, domestic flights – by 3%, and tourists on charter flights were 2% of all passengers.
The most significant increase was achieved in the number of passengers on international scheduled flights that marked an increase of 24% compared to 2015. That positive result is due mainly to the 23 new flights launched in the previous year, which is a record achievement for Sofia Airport within a year.
In 2016 scheduled flights were operated by 24 airlines on more than 70 routes. The leading five air carriers – Wizz Air, Bulgaria Air, Ryanair, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines carried more than 3.5 million passengers to/from Sofia Airport, which forms 71% of annual passenger flow. Last year the most desired destinations were London, Vienna and Frankfurt.
During entire 2016 51 829 aicraft departed and landed at Sofia Airport, which marks an increase of 17% compared to the previous year. That increase was due to international scheduled flights where aircraft movements increased by 21%.
Cargo and mail shipments
14% was the icnrease in cargo flow in 2016 compared to the previous year. A total of 21 157 t cargo and mail shipments were processed.
