Over 3 million passengers at Sofia Airport in the first nine months of 2015


During the first nine months of 2015 at Sofia Airport a total of 3 125 625 departing and arriving passengers were serviced – 6 % more as compared to the previous year.

Passengers on international scheduled flights increased by almost 180 thousand. That segment forms 92 % of the entire airport traffic.

For the first nine months of 2015 passenger traffic at Terminal 1 increased by 16 % as compared to last year. This is due to the 5 new air services to Munich/West, Cologne, Naples, Geneva and Bari.

The most popular destination remained London with 222 thousand passengers choosing that direction. It was followed by Vienna with 125 thousand passengers, Frankfurt with 116 passengers, Munich with 94 thousand, Paris with more than 72 thousand, Istanbul and Rome with more than 60 thousand passengers.

A total of 65 passengers flew on domestic flights.

Charter flights marked some decrease (-3%) that continued the last years’ trend.


Aircraft movements

For the January – September 2015 period a total of 33 767 aircraft (+5.3%) took off and landed at Sofia Airport.

International scheduled flights were 1 247 more in comparison to the number of aircraft movements in the first nine months of 2014. Domestic flights maintained their last year’s level.

A 20% increase was reported in the aircraft movements related to the sector of business aviation.



During the first nine months of 2015, a total of 13 408 tonnes of cargo were processed, which was 7.5 % more as compared to last year. Cargo volumes transported on specialized all-cargo aircraft, constituting 57 % of the entire cargo flow at Sofia Airport, increased by 18 % as compared to 2014.


September 2015

In September 2015 the passengers serviced at Sofia Airport exceeded 400 thousand achieving a 11.3% increase as compared to September last year. The number of inbound and outbound aircraft for that period was 4 144 as compared to 3 760 in the same month of 2014 (+10.2%), and processed cargo and mail shipments equaled to 1 428 t (+4.3%).
