During the first half of 2016, a total of 2 174 335 passengers passed through Sofia Airport which was 260 980 more (+14%) compared to the same period last year. Terminal 1 was used by 41% of all passengers in the first six months of the year, and Terminal 2 – by 59%.
Passenger flow on international scheduled flights marked a 16 % increase on annual base, which was due to the new destinations added to Sofia Airport flight schedule as well as the additional frequencies on a large number of operated routes. During that period, 11 new destinations were introduced, among which – Kiev, Bristol, Oslo/Torp, Birmingham, Pisa, London/Stansted, Lisbon, Alicante, Palermo, Copenhagen and Budapest.
Passengers on domestic scheduled flights from Sofia Airport to Varna and Bourgas dropped slightly by 4% in the first six months of 2016. For the period, the number of passengers on charter flights was 23% lower in comparison to 2015.
During the first half of 2016 a total of 23 795 aircraft landed and departed from Sofia Airport, which was an increase of 12 % on annual base.
A 15% increase was achieved by scheduled international flights. Domestic flights decreased by 3% as compared to last year.
The number of charter flights also decreased (-7%), while specialized cargo flights increased by approximately 2 %
A 15% increase in processed cargo and mail shipments at Sofia Airport was achieved according to first-half statistics as compared to the same period of the previous year. The total volume of processed cargo and mail shipments was 10 325 tonnes. Cargo volumes increased by 16%, while mail shipments by 10% as compared to 2015.
In June 2016 Sofia Airport marked a 13% increase in the total number of served passengers which equalled to 415 559. A total of 4 509 (+16%) aircraft landed and departed from Sofia Airport, and the volume of processed cargo and mail shipments was 1 748 tonnes (-4%).
