In the first 9 months of 2014 г. a total of 2 939 747 departing and arriving passengers were serviced at Sofia Airport – 10 % more than the previous year.
Passengers on international scheduled flights increased by more than 258 thousand, which formed 97 % of the total airport traffic. In the January-September period the number of departing passengers exceeded the number of arriving passengers by about 50 thousand.
The leader among the top destinations was again London with almost 190 departed passengers. Sofia is connected via all-year direct flights to four airports at the capital of U.K. – Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton. Next most popular destinations were Vienna – 124 thousand passengers, Munich and Frankfurt – 94 thousand per each destination, Paris – 71 thousand, and Berlin, Rome and Istanbul – over 60 thousand passengers per each destination.
Amongst the 20 airlines with scheduled flights from/to Sofia Airport, 6 airlines carried more than 100 thousand passengers each for the first 9 months of 2014. These were Bulgaria Air, Wizz Air, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Turkish Airlines. The total growth of these air carriers’ passenger flow was 12 %.
This year’s most dynamically developing destination was Warsaw. The number of the flights of the Polish airline – LOT, the only air carrier operating on this route, was increased by 46 %, and the passengers flying on the route grew by 32 % for the first 9 months of the year.
Charter flights maintained their traffic levels of 2013 – a total of 92 670 tourists were handled in the period.
Passengers on domestic flights to Varna and Burgas were 8 % less than the same period last year.
A total of 32 059 aircraft (+4.5 %) departed and landed at Sofia Airport in the period from January to September 2014. The increase in international flights was 10 %, while the domestic flights marked a 12 %decrease as compared to last year.
Less aircraft movements were registered in cargo aviation and business flights forming 10 % of the total airport traffic at Sofia Airport.
In the first 9 months of 2014, a total of 12 468 tonnes of cargo and mail shipments were processed at Sofia Airport as compared to 12 671 in the last year (-1.6%). Specialized cargo aircraft carried 57 % of cargo shipments, while 97 % of airmail was transported on scheduled passenger flights. The last months of the reported period marked a revival of that aviation industrial sector.
And stronger September 2014
In September 2014 the number of passengers increased by almost 10 % as compared to the same period last year – 360 000 passengers were handled. The number of landed and departed aircraft for the period was 3 760 against 3 618 in September 2013 (+4%), and processed cargo and mail were 1 369 t (+ 2.9 %).
In the beginning of October two airlines – flydubai and Swiss International – announced officially the launch of their flights to Sofia Airport.
The air carrier from United Arab Emirates – flydubai launches flights on Dubai – Sofia route from 14 December this year. They will be operated twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays at Sofia Airport Terminal 2 with convenient hours of departing and landing.
As of the end of March 2015, the Swiss airline – Swiss International renews flights from Zurich to Sofia. On Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays aircraft Avro RJ100 will operate flights at Sofia Airport Terminal 2.
At present, the Sofia – Zurich route is operated by airline Bulgaria Air offering 5 flights per week – every day except for Mondays and Saturdays.
