Every human activity stems from the needs of society. It has its economical benefits but it also has an impact on the environment. In that respect no difference exists between civil aviation and any other human activity – it originated as a response to people’s need to travel faster and more comfortable, which respectively led to various changes in the environment.

Over the course of time it became obvious that the optimum balance needed to be found between the economical benefits of the fast-growing industry and the way it influenced the living conditions of people. That balance lies in the foundation of the strategy for sustainable development of aviation business.

As of 2017, Sofia Airport is a “Major Airport” within the meaning of item 12 of the Supplementary Provisions of the Protection from Environmental Noise Act, with more than 50,000 aircraft movements per year. In this regard, and in accordance with the Protection from Environmental Noise Act and the Directive 2002/49/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 June 2002 relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise, a Strategic Noise Map (SNM) for Sofia Airport was developed. SNM was approved by the Minister of Health with Order No. RD-01-228/02.08.2019.
